I just got the character art from Helena Nikulina on DeviantArt.
She definitely captured how I see him, and I find it so interesting that so many of the artists added jewelry to his dreads when I never mentioned him having any (but I suppose it’d make sense that he would).
Without further ado, here it is:
I’m gonna go cry into a pillow because she did fucking AMAZING.
But first, here’s a TINY part of Book 2. Sinner is attempting to keep a man safe that Dagger (his right hand, for new readers) wants for more questioning:
The night was cold, but then again, everything was to me. Wasn’t an empty night, though.
I dodged a ray of green light from a skilled magic user. Recovered and went at him with a claw. Reached his head just as he produced a small blade outta nowhere and placed it into my abdomen.
I cried my pain—burned like a bitch.
Magicked.
I took off his head with a swipe of my hand and as the blood sprayed from what had been his neck, a woman screamed.
My flight back to the inn had drawn curious, now horrified, passersby. They had decided to linger as the guards, clad in their white uniforms (white-painted armor draped with white silk), appeared. Unlike Tergine, these guards seemed more versed in combat. They carried swords and shields along with their magic. Did it too damn well.
My left shoulder burned fierce from a spell that’d hit me when I landed, but I held onto the man on my right. Wasn’t letting him go.
I knew Dag’d want him alive. That was enough for me.
I dodged an incensed magic user’s green light aimed for my head by ducking but it’d just scraped the arm that held Viron.
His body writhed against the pain but he didn’t get the brunt of it. I did. While my arm burned with the green flame, I did my best to keep the man still. Pressed down a bit more on his back.
His body spasmed then he went still. Got heavier.
Damn it.
Didn’t have time to worry about it: Several more guards were surrounding me, green light at their fingertips.
I dropped Viron at my talons and curled my wings ‘round my front just as the green burned my vision. Felt the beams of painful heat hit me all over. Felt like I was on fire. Burning alive.
And then it was gone.
Just like that.
My cold replaced the heat swift. Felt my burns begin to heal.
I unfurled my wings and looked out at the street.
I faced the inn I’d crashed into and at its open doors were Dagger and Fern. Their hands were up, fingers curled, tension in their stances. They dropped their arms when they realized—through the lingering smoke and all—that they’d kill all the guards. All fourteen of the remaining men and women I hadn’t gotten to yet lay where’d they fallen when the pair’s spell had struck.
Deathly quiet.
Dagger looked at me then at Viron’s body on the ground and ran to us. Disbelief filled his eyes.
He pushed the bandage back over his hairline and knelt at Viron’s side once just in front of me.
Couldn’t look me in the eyes.
Viron had landed on his side and when Dagger pulled him onto his back, Dagger gasped.
Never heard him gasp before.
This ain’t good.
All I can say is, if book 1 was about found family and accepting others for who they really are, book 2 is about that unfurling. Because we love chaos over here. :D
